Argentina-born Texas product Gabriel Funes returns to Argentina–starts for River Plate–scores a goal

Gabriel Funes, the 18-year-old Argentina-born Texan who won the 2008 Sueno MLS competition and then signed with Argentina’s River Plate, has made three appearances for the legendary Buenos Aires club.

On Monday, he scored his first goal.

From high school soccer in the US to scoring goals for River Plate. What a story, and what a potential talent. If anyone has any information on Mr. Funes’ citizenship status, please let me know.

i played with gabriel on a Dallas club team from about 12 years old until we turned 17. he was born in argentina and his parents moved here with him and his twin brother when they were 10 years old. they were here on a temporary visa i believe. i doubt he will ever come back because of the oopurtunity he has over there with riverplate.

I have no idea why the MLS didnt give him a contract after he won Sueno MLS.

Thanks, Brice. Looks like another one slipped through the cracks . . .
