Union announce new keeper coach–announce announcement in Reading–announce nothing about the tryouts

Rob Vartughian is the Philadelphia Union’s new assistant coach/goalkeeper coordinator, Philadelphia Union Communications announced late Tuesday. As assistant coach at the University of Maryland, Vartughian played a key role in the team’s success over the past seven years, helping the Terrapins reach seven straight NCAA tournament appearances and win two NCAA national championships

The Union will be making an announcement on Monday, Dec. 21 in Reading, PA. It is widely expected that they will announce a partnership with the Reading Rage, which runs a highly-regarded youth development program and also fields a team in the USL Premier Development League. Two players from the Rage, Jason Yeisley of Penn State and Adam Welch of Lehigh, will take part in January’s MLS combine. (h/t to reader Prime/Crappy for the info–thanks again).

Finally, a quick note. I have spoken to two of the better prospects for the open tryouts (both were featured on the official Union site). Neither has been contacted yet regarding callbacks. They were told they would be notified in about ten days. I will follow up as soon as I get more information.

Haven’t gotten in touch with Harada yet, though I have placed a few calls in to Crystal Palace Baltimore. I’m not trying to keep things secret, but I just want to do a follow up interview with the guys before I post anything substantial.

Spoke to Crystal Palace reps today. Harada has yet to hear back. Same with Brian Mascarenhas (former u-17, played under Hackworth), and Long Tan (former U-19 Chinese international). Announcements should have been made today (ten days after Dec. 6 tryout.). Hoping to hear from the club by the end of the week . . . I will post something as soon as I know.
