Philadelphia Union 2010 schedule released—soccer gods smile on non-local Union fans
Coming to a Chester near you on June 27
When the Union announced their partnership with ABC6 last week the excitement that spread through the Philly blogging (and twittering) universe did not reach my cold, snowy corner of Syracuse New York. Sure, it was great news for the team and the local fans but how the hell was I supposed to watch games?
For the most part that question was answered today, with the release of the full MLS schedule and the announcement that 17 (17!) Union games will be on national television this year. I would have shouted in joy but I was in class at the time, surreptitiously checking the news on my smart phone. So I made an excited grimace and waited until my first free moment (now) to put up a post about the news.
The Union also announced that the newly christened PPL Park will not open until June 27. Thankfully, the latter half of the year is packed with home fixtures, meaning 13 of the team’s 15 home games will be played at the stadium. The first two home games–against DC United (April 10) and FC Dallas (May 15)–will be played at Lincoln Financial Field.
“As we have stated from the very beginning, we will play the vast majority of our games in our new stadium,” Nick Sakiewicz said in the press release.
“It is incredibly exciting to see all of the effort and energy we’ve put into creating our stadium and our team burst onto the national and international scene.”
Five of the 17 nationally televised games will be on Spanish language television channels. Which leaves me wondering: how do you say “SoB” in Spanish?

Actually for $20 over the Internet, or $79 on cable/satellite, you can watch pretty much ever MLS game (league wide) that isn’t on ESPN, FSC or Telefutura.

OrionPax has it spot on. $20 annually for a whole season over the Internet through MLSnet.com website. I have been doing it for 3 years since becoming a SoB & it is a sweet deal.
Yeah actually I asked about MLS Direct Kick on twitter a while ago and didn’t get much feedback. I think I will pay for it (17 games is just a little over half, after all). The advantage of national TV coverage is, of course, the fact that I don’t have to watch the games on my teeny laptop monitor (and those HD games will be beautiful).
Morris, DK is a mixed deal. I like watching all the games, (Except for like New York vs San Jose type of games) but most of the time you get 2-3 games playing at the same time. If you could record one game and watch another then that’s gravy. At-least with the $20 with mlsnet you can watch archives. You could also hook your laptop to your t.v. I just got a laptop with HDMI spot so hopefully it runs better this time around.
If you have the money though, DK is awesome. I loved it for the couple of months I did have it.
Note:the first two or so weeks are considered free for DK!
Hey Arkose, good to see (?) you again. I don’t think I’ll pay for the cable/satellite version because that’s just too expensive and I’m poor. But $20 is totally reasonable and for some reason I forgot I could hook up my laptop to my TV. Sound like I’ll be in Philly Union heaven this year–although I’m wondering: is the video quality any good?
Organic chemistry tests had my time busy for a couple of weeks.
If MLSnet improves the quality like they did last year than it should be pretty dang decent. Outside of the Wizards, I could see each player and the ball. I was also using a S-video cable, this year I’ll be using a HDMI cable which should also improve quality from laptop to t.v.
i’m not sure if it even matters but I usually manually connect to the internet to try to help with quality and refresh rates.
I plan on doing the same thing this year. Just remember its not full t.v. quality. (video card matters also, which I have upgraded this year)
